Building Sustainable MTSS Practices: Coaching Highlights from the New Year

As we step into a new year of implementation, schools across the state have been engaging in targeted NDMTSS coaching designed to strengthen instructional practices, refine systems, and ultimately improve outcomes for both learners and educators. Our coaching efforts this semester have centered on analyzing current data, aligning instructional interventions and supports, and building structures that create lasting, meaningful change.

Using Semester Data to Drive Instructional Grouping

This winter, NDMTSS coaching sessions focused on guiding school teams through a deep review of semester benchmarks and progress monitoring‑monitoring data. Together, we:

  • Identified patterns in student performance across content areas
  • Formed instructional groups aligned to specific skill needs
  • Ensured supports were matched to the intensity and type of need
  • Strengthened the use of formative data to monitor student response and adjust instruction

This work allowed teams to refine Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports, ensuring every student receives the right instruction at the right time.

Assessing Systems to Plan for Sustainable Change

In addition to instructional decision-making, NDMTSS coaching sessions provided space for teams to reflect on the current state of their MTSS systems. Through guided conversations and structured team activities, schools:

  • Reviewed existing practices, resources, and team structures
  • Identified barriers impacting implementation
  • Prioritized actionable steps to build more efficient and effective systems
  • Developed plans that support long-term sustainability rather than short-term‑term fixes

This systems-level planning is helping teams create more predictable, aligned, and supportive environments for both students and educators.

Strengthening Capacity Across the State

The NDMTSS coaching provided this semester continues to build a foundation for strong, collaborative MTSS implementation statewide. By combining data-driven instructional decisions with thoughtful system level‑level planning, schools are better positioned to support each student while creating conditions that foster educator growth and success.

As the year continues, our NDMTSS Team looks forward to continued collaboration, learning, and progress with teams from across the state.
